Marquis
Marquis first became a part of Touching Miami with Love (TML) during the summer after his first-grade year. From those early days, he recalls the joy of community-focused activities like group morning celebrations, which made him feel connected and supported.
Over the years, TML has significantly impacted Marquis’s growth, both personally and academically. The staff consistently monitored his academic progress, stepping in to provide support when needed. Marquis credits TML with helping him stay on track in school and instilling important life lessons, such as the value of integrity. A memorable rule from his early days at TML “Always do what you know is right, even when no one is looking” continues to guide him.
When Marquis became a youth intern, he was excited to return to a program that had played such an essential role in his life. As an intern, Marquis found great fulfillment in mentoring younger students and watching them grow academically and personally. He also discovered his talent for patience and developed stronger communication and leadership skills.
One of Marquis’s most rewarding experiences was receiving encouragement from a staff member, Ms. Jeanette, who told him on her last day how much potential he had and how far he could go in life. Moments like these have shaped his belief in himself and his desire to Inspire others.
Today, Marquis is preparing for college, a journey TML has supported by helping him research schools and majors. His experiences at TML have sparked an interest in working with children, and he hopes to continue giving back to his community by helping young people navigate challenges, both academically and personally.
Marquis offers this heartfelt advice to others: take full advantage of every opportunity TML provides and appreciate the mentors who help you along the way. As he prepares for college, Marquis is equipped with the invaluable skills and values he developed at TML, including adaptability, leadership, and strong communication. With his sights set on the future, he is committed to making a meaningful impact on his community, determined to pass on the encouragement and support that shaped his journey.
