Summer Camp 2023!

Aug 1, 2023

Summer 2023 was one for the books! Over 300 children and youth from Overtown and West Homestead attended our all-day Summer Camp. Our hallways were full of laughter, love, and adventure for six weeks. Students participated in educational activities, engaging field trips, and epic adventures.

Check out the list of exciting field trips that our students experienced this summer:

Splish Splash! Kiwanis Homestead allowed our students at West Homestead to receive six weeks of swimming lessons because, living in Florida, it is a necessity to know how to swim. We want our children prepared for the pool, beach, and adventure that comes their way.

Summer Camp allowed our students to start and end each day with praise and worship. With our holistic approach, our camp provides opportunities for our students to explore their faith, dive into experiments in math and science, work together learning dance routines, practice Social-emotional learning lessons, and prevent the summer slide by incorporating fun literacy every day. This could not have been possible without our partners, FIU Reading Explores, and our teaching connection with Summer 305. Summer 305 allows teachers from the Miami Dade County school system to engage in our community by providing daily direct service.

Fire up the grill! Families came together every Wednesday to enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs and fellowship. The neighborly competition of Bingo created a fun atmosphere where the TML family all came together from parents, community members, students, alumni, and partners. The coveted gift cards were a hit among our families, and by week 6 the community that had been built among participants proved the importance of neighborhood gatherings.

Thank you to our dedicated staff, volunteers, and to YOU! Your support of Touching Miami with Love, whether through prayer, finances, resources, or connections, makes our Summer Camp possible. Our work is not done, and we look forward to all the opportunities that are to come this academic school year.

We also want to extend our thanks to Overtown Children and Youth Coalition, Overtown Youth CenterFit to Lead, and Liberty City Trust for allowing us to work with 26 interns this Summer, who worked very hard and developed soft work and hands-on learning skills that are essential for success in any future career path.

As summer 2023 comes to an end, the memories created during this time will forever be cherished by our children and team. The friendships formed, the lessons learned, and the experiences gained will serve as a foundation for their future successes.
